Dr Albert Mifsud

Microbiology and Virology Expert, Extensive Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Albert Mifsud is a Microbiology and Virology expert with extensive medico-legal experience. Albert travelled to the United Kingdom from Malta to study medicine at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London in 1978.

He trained in microbiology and virology at the Royal London Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital and at various locations with the Public Health Laboratory Service. He undertook some adult and paediatric clinical infectious diseases training at St Ann’s Infectious Diseases Unit.

  • He was awarded MD (University of London) for research into Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • He undertakes his clinical work primarily at Whipps Cross University Hospital which is part of Barts Health NHS Trust.
  • Dr Albert Mifsud is Past-President (2017-19) of the British Infection Association having been a member of Council of BIA and of the Association of Medical Microbiologists for many years.
  • He has completed two terms of office as a member of the Royal College of Pathologists Specialty Advisory Committee and remains on its Training Committee.
  • He Chairs the Professional Advisory Committee of the Medical Laboratory Services Professional Advisory Committee of United Kingdom Accreditation Service
  • He is a UK representative to the Medical Microbiology Section of the UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists) and has been elected Honorary Treasurer.
  • Dr Mifsud has been elected as Honorary Secretary to the Council for European Medical Specialist Assessments.
  • He chairs the Steering Committee of the UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations, which develops evidence-based, NICE-accredited laboratory procedures and algorithms.
